Rosie 99, his age is another mystery, his marriage in 1886 to Sarah Coward says he is 50, the 1891 census, even though its only 5 years later, states he is 65. The marriage is only a transcription so there is a chance i suppose his age been transcribed wrong and his was actually 60 in 1886, would make a bit more sense i think x

He possibly lowered his age at marriage so as not to appear to be so much older than Sarah.

The William you found in 1881 with wife Jane gives his age as 32 in 1861, 47 in 1871, and 53 in 1881.
His birth place is constant as Motherby.  His wife Jane was born in Scotland and their possible first child bn c1858 Penrith.

Rosie99 ive just found this marriage in the paper in1 1886

William Dixon, to Sarah Coward both of Old London Road, Penrith.

In 1881 William Dixon is living at this address with Jane and 5 children, so this is defo his first wife, all the children are registered under the Ewart name but i cant find a marriage for William with a Jane Ewart anywhere x

I came to the same conclusion. 1851 census finds the possible parents at ref 2425 340 15. Son George born Motherby.. Struggling to find any of the family in 1841 census though.

SS

added, going by the births of John & Jane they should in 1841 be in Dacre. All children have surname Edmondson. Parents married Greystoke 1826.

1841 under DICKSON
James Dickson 35
Ann Dickson 35
William Dickson 11
James Dickson 9
Mary Dickson 7
George Dickson 5
John Dickson   2

Has anybody had any luck finding Williams first marriage to Jane ? he was with her on the census in 1861,71 and 1881. The children are registered under the name of Ewart apart from John Dixon in 1862 and its spelt as Hewit x

Death of Jane/Janet. Also 1881 census has her pob as Gretna, Dumfries. Possible birth entry.
