JAMES FENTON of Golden Lane Watchmaker
« on: Wednesday 08 October 25 13:09 BST (UK) »
Hi

I have been round in circles trying to find any information on James Fenton. He is mentioned in a will by Mary Warner who died in 1799 in Enfield. She references her niece Elizabeth Fenton the wife of James Fenton of Golden Lane watch maker. I thought I’d find him listed as an apprentice but I haven’t come up with anything thus far. If anyone could help locate anything on James or Elizabeth that would be amazing!

Can you confirm the marriage of the niece?  Wondering if perhaps the surname was something else that sounded like Fenton.

If she died in 1799 & the Fentons were married by then they were probably born in the 1760's or before so it's more than likely they died before the 1841 census.

Any idea of Elizabeth's maiden name - Warner or ?

In 1792 there are James Fenton/Elizabeth Harris marriage banns in Cripplegate London.  She is a widow.

She refers to Elizabeth as her niece so I assumed it would be Warner. The other last names in the will are White and Allen but she definitely states that Elizabeth is her niece, the other last names appear to be people who have married into the family.

The will also mentions her sister Ann Cox? widow.

The allowance she was given (Ann) in the event of her death was to be given to Elizabeth Fenton, so is

it possible she was Ann's daughter?

ADDED
There is also a sister Sarah whose surname I cannot determine.

That makes sense. I’ve located the rest, I just haven’t found anything about the Fentons

So you have George Allen who married Mary Speller by license 10 July 1794 at Broxbourne, Hertfordshire

Witness Richard Allen, Sarah Harris and R? Berry.
