Why does Charles have a different surname to Michael?

In Swedish.....
Sjö = Sea - blad = leaf

Both the 1891 & 1901 UK census record Charles birthplace as SWEDEN.

SS

The people in Finland in these areas counted themselves as Swedes. The language was Swedish too not Finnish.

Here is a site with original Finnish records. I don't think these are indexed, so you have to know pretty closely where to look. I did find the burial/death of Michel Sjöblad.

In Church records/Eurajoki

https://www.sukuhistoria.fi/sshy/index_eng.htm

Eurajoki burials or deaths (kuolleet)
No. 228, August 29. Kaukomäki (=Far Hill, about 4 miles from Eurajoki)
Michel Sjöblad married (gift)

Mead - Herts, Bucks, Essex
Pontifex - Bucks
Goldhurst - London, Middx, Herts
Kellogg/Kelhog - Essex, Cambs

This could be Charles Michael and family. If this is the correct family his name is Michel, not Carl Michel.

1829 - Marriage - Michel and Clara - Närpes - nr 29:

1833 - Birth - Michel - Närpes -bottom right:

Hmmm.
This is not the same Michel Sjöblad I found. His wife is Johanna.

I don't think that the Michel and Johanna from Eurajoki are the correct family. This is their record from the Examination Household book from 1846. They don't have children yet. Also, the minister recorded that they were married in 1845.

https://www.sukuhistoria.fi/sshy/kirjat/Kirkonkirjat/eurajoki/rippikirja_1846-1852_mko15-30/134.htm - top

Their 1st child came in 1846:

In the Hiski index, Mickel Mattsson Sjöblad, from Eurajoki, married Johanna Johansdotter in Rauma in 1845 and they had Johanna in 1846 and Johan in 1849, in Eurajoki.

Rauma - Raumo - married

Announc.   Married   Village   Farm   Man   Wife   Village   Farm
     2.11.1845   Euråmn: Kaukomäki Junnila       Drg. Mickel Mattss. Sjöblad   Trp dtt:r Johanna Johansdr.     Sorka Tiilivuori   Heinilä

Eurajoki - Euraåminne - christened

•   Father's last name: SJÖBLAD => Sjöblad
Born   Christened   Village   Farm   Father   Mother   Child
 1.11.1846   2.11.1846   Kaukom.   Junnila   Drg Michel Sjöblad   Johanna Johans:dr   23   Johanna
 24.6.1849   25.6.1849   Kaukom   Suonperä   Trp Michel Matts:s Sjöblad   Johanna Johs:dr   25   Johan Erland
 4.6.1896       Irjanne   s.176   Juho Erland Sjöblad   v:o Amanda Lovisa Mårtenson 42   Elsa Maria

So it looks like we have two different people, or did Michel Sjöblad move around a lot and marry twice?

I think we need more input. From Närpes to Rauma is about 100 miles. Not impossible for an able-bodied seaman, of course...

These are 2 different families. The Michels have 2 different birth dates.
