Temperance Hotel, Barker Gate, Nottingham 1880s
« on: Wednesday 08 October 25 09:01 BST (UK) »
I've just found a Nottingham Evening Post article from 1st June 1888 (attached) regarding a court case and mentioning widowed Mrs Anne Crook and her son George. I am trying to pinpoint when she took on the temperance hotel in Barker Gate (which would have been after her husband died in Jan 1885 in Wiltshire), and when she switched businesses to a grocery/off-licence at 59 Alfreton Rd, Radford.

I thought it amusing that she'd switched from a temperance establishment to running an offy!

I can't find any more (I'm using FindMyPast newspaper search) other than her applying for a Sunday licence in August 1888.  By the end of 1889, she was living in Green Bank, Matlock, according to her marriage record to William Matthews of Nottingham.

I already have quite a lot of info about Ann(e) Crook up to 1885 and after 1889, but would like to establish when she moved to Nottingham, and when she moved to Matlock.

Thanks.

Edward HICKLING, grocer and provison dealer of 59 Alfreton Rd was bankrupt in 1887. A detailed account of the first meeting of creditors here:

The business first advertised "To let/For Sale" 8 Oct 1887 and last advertised "To let - ingoing £16" (no mention of sale) appeared 14 Feb 1888.

That was fast!  Thanks to both of you.

maddys52 - I'll look up more about Hickling.

hanes teulu - I think you are referring to the grocer's shop?  So it looks like Ann Crook kept it on as owner and might have left Nottingham for Matlock once she found a tenant.

Thanks very much for that.  Wonder what ingoing means?  Is that the income from sales?

Edit: According to Collins dictionary
(often plural) English law
the sum paid by a new tenant for fixtures left behind by the outgoing tenant

And another ad 'to be sold or let' on 12th Jan 1888.   Seems the wording of the ads varied between to be sold, to let or the choice.

And another 'apply to 92 Alfreton Rd' that is probably related.  10th Feb 1888.  So possibly the new owner/tenant didn't want these items.

Meanwhile - I still can't find much about the temperance hotel in Barker Gate and am trying Facebook history groups for that.
