Photo ID in Chepstow
« on: Monday 06 October 25 17:49 BST (UK) »
Update - thanks for all the help, we have now found what we were looking for. This forum rocks!

Hi, I'm hoping someone can help. We've come across these photos of the Meads Hotel in Chepstow, but we cant work out where they are. Can anyone place them in modern day Chepstow please?
I keep getting directed to St Pierre, but I have a second photo with 2 buildings, the one on the right looks more like Piercefield Manor.
Thank you

This looks like the large old house in your second photograph. It is said to be Mead Farmhouse, Sedbury Lane, Tidenham.

Ooh yes, that really does look like it!  And the name fits as well. I actually thought it was the building on the right, the white one, but I found another photo ofvthis older one x

As far as I can see newspaper adverts for the hotel started in 1938, for example:

7 October 1938: Illustrated Sporting and Dramatic News
Quote
WYE VALLEY, Meads Hotel, unlicensed Sedbury, near Chepstow, delightful old Georgian House, own farm, electric light throughout, modern sanitation, Company's water. Excellent food. Golf, Golf, riding, tennis included in terms. Tariff on application.

By 1950 they looked like this:

3 March 1950: Bournemouth Times and Directory
Quote
WYE VALLEY, Chepstow. Spend a happy holiday at Meads Hotel and Country Club. Good food from own farm. Slumberland beds, h. and c. Terms 6 gns. per week inclusive. Bra470

and the most recent item that I found:

6 May 1958: Western Mail
Quote
WYE Valley.—Coach Parties Parties catered for.—Book your Annual and Staff Outings, etc.. for Luncheons. and Teas. Dinners and Social Evenings at Meads Hotel. Chepstow 2486.
