I am trying to track down this John and Maria:
1851 census 2 New Cleveland St, Leeds
John SHORT, 25, bricklayer with Maria, 20 and Ann, 2.
The only Ann SHORT I can find being born in Leeds c1849 is:
Baptism: 17 Jan 1849 d John (engine tenter) and Maria of Haymount Place, Leeds
Birth: 15 Dec 1848 d John (engine tenter) and Maria (nee PEARSON) of 7 Back Hay Mount Place
...which fits with this marriage in Wakefield:
1846 John SHORT, engineer s William and Maria, minor (actually only 15!), d John PEARSON, bricklayer
Are these John and Maria couples the same people, with Maria's father persuading John to move from looking after engines to laying bricks? It seems an odd change.
Either way, I can't find any of them in later censuses with the possible exception of a Maria SHORT , mar, 30, charwoman b Bradford in 1861 (she was actually born in Leeds).
