I think that as the registration number for that marriage is quite low (952/1872), it was earlier in the year. Hugo KING deserted on 24 December 1872.

It seems the Patterdale arrived in Melbourne on 27 Nov 1872.

A search here

https://recordsearch.naa.gov.au/SearchNRetrieve/Interface/SearchScreens/AdvSearchAll.aspx

brings up the 1906 naturalization application record for Friederich Wilhelm Hugo Koenig. Born 8th Oct 1846.
German
Arr. 1866 from Germany.
A miner who has lived in Bendigo, Queenstown and Melbourne

His current address is 15 Duke Street Abbotsford.

His son known as Victor KING enlisted and gave his mother Margaret as NOK living at 15 Duke Street Abbotsford

The son's birth

KOENIG Fredk Wilhelm Vic
Mother Margt Jane CaRROLL
Father Fredk Wilhelm H
At QUEENSTOWN
14992/1894

Looks like the surname was anglisized to KING.
There are numerous mentions of him in the newspapers living in Bendigo and Queenstown

Sue

ADDING.

This obituary notice rules out the Hugh KING mentioned by ciderdrinker I think.

From Trove.nla.gov.au
Patterdale departed Melbourne 24/12/1872 for San Francisco via Newcastle.

If his desertion is correct perhaps he just didn't board the ship before departure and hence was designated as a deserter. So he MAY have died in Dec 1872 or his date of death was given as the last time seen i.e. 24/12/1872. (Sorry if this isn't too clear!)
There are a couple of references to a Hugo King Fined for larceny from March 31 1884 (Vic Petty sessions) But doesn't prove its him.
