John Pease 1767-1790. Second Fleet ship Neptune.
« on: Friday 03 October 25 04:43 BST (UK) »
Hello,

This might help with anyone that is looking into the convicts of the Second Fleet (or the "Death Fleet), from the ship Neptune. Now I'm not sure if John Pease and I share a common ancestor - this is something that is very hard to find and I'm hoping someone might have more information - but what I know so far is:

John Pease 1767 Convicted at Borough of Kings Lynn in Norfolk England 16 July 1787. He was then sent to Australia two years later on board the Neptune which sailed in 1789. He died on the Neptune on 1 January 1790, 6 months before the Neptune landed in Sydney Cove.

I cannot find any other information on John Pease. I don't know where he was born, or what his conviction was, or where he was held for two years before being sent off on the second fleet.

I feel like I need to restore some dignity to John Pease, at least to find his family. Perhaps he stole to survive as so many did back then. I just don't know.

If anyone has any information that might be our John here then I'd love to hear from you!

Cheers.

He could have been held on a Prison Hulk;

Overcrowding Relief: The main purpose of the hulks was to provide space for the large number of prisoners when jails were full.
Transportation to Australia: The hulks served as an intermediate stage for convicts who would eventually be transported to penal colonies in Australia.

Have you looked at The Norfolk Record Office website?

There are some records from the King Lynn sessions on familysearch full text.

Unfortunately does not give much information about him, but he was convicted for burglary, originally sentenced to death before being "pardoned" (the transportation is written as a condition of his pardon, rather than a punishment, in these records).
