Hi,

The attached Oct. 1665 extract is from St. Mildred, Poultry in London.

I am trying to confirm the last four burial dates. Fourth from bottom seems to be iiij (for 4 Oct). Third from bottom seems to be vi (for 6 Oct). Second from bottom seems maybe to be ix (for 9 Oct). However, the last seems to be viij (for 8 Oct and a day earlier than the preceding entry) which would be illogical.

Clearly I'm reading it wrong. Can anybody please tell me what I should be seeing, how the numbers are actually written and the correct corresponding dates ?

Thanks in advance for all comments/suggestions/etc.

You seem to have read the dates correctly. One possibility is that the clerk who wrote the last date as viij actually made an error and meant to write xiij. The other possibility is that the book was being written up from notes and a mistake in the order of days was made then.

I took a glance at the following page to see whether it contained an explanation of the apparent discrepancy.

Sarah Jones was the last burial entered until May 1667, due to the "Wasting Plague and Dreadfull Fire", the parishioners being "dispersed" during the intervening time.
