Sarah Ayres 1737 - 1766
« on: Tuesday 30 September 25 12:48 BST (UK) »
Hi All
I have struck the proverbial brick wall, can anyone do a a lookup for me, please. This is what I know:
Sarah Ayres 1737 - 1766 Birth Ashington West Sussex  Father Edward Eyres 1697 - 1743    Mother
Elizabeth Penfold 1699 - 1739. I have a marriage for Sarah to Nicolas Powell B.1700 M. 1748. I have only access To Ancestry and Family Search and both give a marriage for Edward Ayres 1697 - 1743 to Sarah Ayres after the death of Nicolas Powell, this cant be right as it appears she is married to her own Father. Appreciate any help on this one. Thanks.

The marriage of Sarah Ayres and Nicholas Powell 1748/49 image on Ancestry states that Sarah Ayres was a Widow when she married Nicholas Powell

ADDED

You have birth date of 1737 and death date of 1766.  Presumably you have her burial, what name was that in.  Where and when did Nicholas Powell die

Hi Rosie99
I have a death Date of abt 1766 and a burial date of 5th Sept 1766 Burial Location Ashington West Sussex in the name of Sarah Ayres. The record is from West Sussex Record Office.
I have read the entry on Ancestry and it does say she was widowed when she married Nicholas Powell.  I must have interpreted it wrong, but who was her first spouse? I still believe the record must be wrong to have an entry that it was the same person as her Father????  Thanking you for you help and input.

Her burial would be in the name of Powell.  If your birth date for Sarah is correct then you are suggesting that she was a widow at the age of 11 / 12

Where do you have the burial for Nicholas Powell

So it is possible Edward Eyres married Sarah Bowel.
Baptised 2 children.
He died 1742/3.
She remarried to Nicholas 1748/9.
They had 1 Son John 1750
Nicholas possibly died 1754

Sarah Bowel was recorded as resident in Shipley on the 1739 marriage entry.

Nicholas Powell and Sarah married by licence.  The sureties were Nicholas himself and Edward Hards, yeoman of Ashington.  Nicholas was a labourer.

There is also a 1743 marriage licence for Nicholas Powell, bachelor husbandman of Shipley and Sarah Lock spinster of Angmering, sureties - Nicholas Powell and Thomas Stringer, victualler.  They married 4 Oct 1743.

And unfortunately there is another Nicholas Powell who married Sarah Gosby 16 May 1733 in Washington.

There are some burials for various Nicholas Powells - one in Shipley in 1734, one in Washington in 1760, another in Angmering in 1754.

Ann, the daughter of Nicholas & Sarah Powell was buried in Storrington in 1770.

May I ask how you arrived at Nicholas Powell and how you determined that the marriage to Sarah Ayres was the one you sought?

Nell
