Was there a Darkley Avenue, Scotstoun?
« on: Monday 29 September 25 06:51 BST (UK) »
Hi everyone. In researching my ancestor William Smith, a man i have very little info on other than he was a dock worker possibly turned seaman in the Merchant Navy, (possibly around 1890s onwards.) Ive been searching for death records and came across a possibility, a man who died aged 59 of heart failure in 1910 at sea and whose last residence was a 26 Darkley Avenue, Scotstoun, according to the death record.  I searched valuation rolls and did a Google search for that street but came up empty.

I'd hoped to use his address to see if it might be my william. Ive never been able to find him on any records as his dock work meant he lived in lodging houses and moved around a lot. He was never married either. No idea of ethnicity, age, or birthplace. His daughter Isabella stayed with him in Lochee for 2 months in 1890 before finding herself travelling back to Glasgow for poor relief. No idea where he goes after that.

Anyway, was there such a street as Darkley Avenue in Scotstoun? I wasnt sure i am allowed to post the picture so I havent but the info is typed.

That was best guess as well. I tried to search for it but foud nothing so I guessed it mightve been renamed or something. Thank you, my next thing was to search the ordnance survey maps but I find it hard to navigate that. Appreciate this.

Thanks for this! This is not my william then. His daughter's mother was Margaret and daur Isabella appears in 1911 census in the Calton area with her husband and children. Thanks for finding this. At least I can rule this one out. His name is so common and with so little info, im always glad to narrow it down a little further
