Help! Put 2GGM in with wrong family and can't find her family

2ggmother is Nettie E Carter b. 1853 in VA.  Married Abner H Vickery 1873 in MO.  She is found in 1880 Census in Union, White Co., AR.  Listed as a widow, but has another child with Abner.  In this census she is with Sarah McClure (married name: Corder) who I took to be her mother.  Sarah goes back to her family in Tennessee and Nettie goes on to CA.  Having searched all possible names and states have not been able to find Nettie before 1873 marriage.  In FamilySearch she is 9QRL-DW3.
Have I totally mixed up her family?  She is not in any of the Corder census records.  Suggestions where I can go to find her immediate family.

The 1880 census you mentioned doesn't list a relationship for any of these people, but it says Nettie was age 26 and Sarah was 78, which doesn't fit the other information for Sarah on the Family Search tree or make it possible for her to be in the age range to be Nettie's mother.  It could be a census taker's mistake or bad info given, but it makes me a little suspicious that something could be off.  There's also an entry on Family Search for Sarah in a different location under a different name for the 1880 census. 

I don't know what the answer is, but I'd say to double check everything as much as you can and figure out if there's anything you can look for to fill in any blanks, like vital records, probate records, land records, mentions in the newspaper, etc.

Thanks for your suggestions.  I've also been wondering if Sarah is a totally different person.  I'll check into the sources you've recommended as the 'story' I've been thinking just doesn't fit.
