AVOIDING MILITARY SERVICE. William George Darnell (40) a cycle repairer, of 32, Buckingham Street. Oxford, was brought up on remand charged with making a false statement to the local tribunal in order to obtain an exemption certificate, and with being a military absentee. Dr. Galpin appeared for the prosecution, and stated that defendant had in his application for exemption given his age as 40 last December. He had misrepresented his age by four years. Dr. Galpin submitted that defendant knew what his age was, and that it was a mean and contemptible trick to escape his military duly. —Defendant put in a written statement, in which he expressed his sorrow, and said that he had done it because he was worried about having to give up his business and leave his wife and family.—Prisoner was fined £3 on the first charge, or one month's imprisonment: and on the second handed over to the military authorities.

The Local Tribunal dismissed the application. being largely influenced by the fact that the man was convicted for making a false declaration under the National Registration Act, for which he was fined £3 and handed over to the military. They could not understand why the military were again serving him with notice to join up. The appellant said when he went to the military he was rejected.—The application was dismissed.
