Confusing Baptism Entries

Checking the baptism of Anna Maria Lake, born 1839, I see her parents are recorded as Samuel Lake and Eliza Bickers, and under residence it says 'their child'. All other entries conform to usual expectations. The corresponding BT doesn't include a father, just Eliza Bickers but that may be due to a bad copy.  The couple had married locally in 1836 so why are they treated this way - any ideas?

GRO give the entry for Anna Maria Lake - June quarter 1839 - Loddon and Clavering Union - mother's maiden name is Bickers.

That's right - there's no explanation, she's legitimate and her entry is in the middle of the page.  All the others are as you would expect.  It feels a bit personal but I can't think why.

Hi,

It often depends on who performed the christening as to what details are included some were more particular than others.

In this instance it is J B Thompson, if you turn to the next page you will see item no 62 he again records  the Mothers maiden name.

So nothing strange, he obviously felt it important to include MMN.

If  Samuel Lake and Eliza Bickers married 1836, Anna Maria Lake - June quarter 1839 - Loddon and Clavering Union - mother's maiden name is Bickers GRO and the baptism named Anna Maria Lake parents as Samuel Lake and Eliza Bickers (Its not that unusual to name the mother maiden name on baptisms)

Anna Maria Lake birth certificate should clarify the important info.

That's all true, Dobfarm. The docs proved those details but the church baptismal records looked as if the parents weren't married, the BT only shows mum and her maiden name.  But spendlove has pointed out that the particular cleric had a habit of recording mmn while his colleagues didn't.  All good now!

I'm afraid ancestry records don't always give uniformity! that modern admin workers work to high standards of paperwork that need have uniformed consistency records -  that we are use too today - unfortunately.

Your lucky as a lot of pre 1813 church registers baptisms only give the fathers name, and marriages don't give fathers name or occupation.
