This is Thomas Ryan. Born in Portlaw, Co. Waterford, Ireland, but moved to Croydon as a boy. This is the only picture the family has of him. What they know of this man is that he was a stableman/groomsman and that he had traveled back and forth to France, collecting and bringing horses back to England during WWI. It is thought that he might have been in a volunteer force rather than the regular army. Unfortunately, the photograph is not the clearest, but perhaps someone might be able to recognise the badge.
