Ghost family?
« on: Yesterday at 21:27 »
In the 1901 census there is the following family in Hamilton, Lanarkshire.

Philip McHaffie Head 58
Deborah McHaffie Wife 53 (née Humphries/Humphreys)
John McHaffie Son 27
Mary McHaffie Daughter 25
James McHaffie Son 23
Sarah McHaffie Daughter20

all born in Ireland. I have searched www.irishgenealogy.ie for the births for all four children, and marriages for Philip, using M*h*f* in the hope of picking up all variants, but have drawn a complete blank so far. I'm mainly intrested in John, but hoped that one of the others might provide a clue to where they came from.

Ideas, anyone?
Never trust anything you find online (especially submitted trees and transcriptions on Ancestry, MyHeritage, FindMyPast and other commercial web sites) unless it's an image of an original document - and even then be wary because errors can and do occur.

Closest in Ireland I can find, so far, is this one but thought it's way too early-
https://www.irishgenealogy.ie/files/civil/marriage_returns/marriages_1859/09570/5469925.pdf

Then I found this baptism for Sarah Anna Caughey in 1880-

(can't find match in Irish Genealogy yet)

Other children-
Thomas (3 Oct.1864)

Philip (29 Sept.1866)

Caughey > McCaughey > McHaffie?

Son Philip born c1869 according to extract of marriage-
https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:6TLH-BXMF?lang=en
Year not far off birth in Ireland I posted in previous post.

In 1911 census there's a possible entry for Deborah in Hamilton dist. (age 72 so born c1839 which could fit for 1859 marriage). On same page seems to be a John McHaffie age 34?

Is this Philip? died 1904 (Hamilton dist.) age 53 with mother's maiden name Haley

Fuzzy searching McHaffie (mother Humphrey) brings up 3 deaths also in Hamilton-
Sarah age 33 in 1921
Philip age 47 in 1921
James 30 in 1916

The ages in Scottish records aren't very consistent.

Note the latin bottom right of Deborah's name in this entry.  She was non Catholic / Protestant. So any RC marriage would have required a special dispensation.

Added: I can see a transcript of a baptism (date 11 September 1836) in Currin Church of Ireland parish for a Deborah Humphries, parents given as John and Margaret Humphries, the address was the townland of Crussin (Lattacrossan).
