Sanders family, Hatherleigh
« on: Tuesday 23 September 25 18:43 BST (UK) »
Hi all, I'm trying to track back from my ancestor John Sanders but I'm getting confused between two families.

John Sanders was b. about 1833 in Hatherleigh and married Thomasin Fursdon in 1853. I have them on the census from 1861-1891, his rough DOB varies from 1830-33. Marriage certificate gives his father as James Sanders.

On the 1891 census there is also another John Sanders b. about 1833 in Hatherleigh.

The 1851 census has two different couples called James and Mary Sanders. One of them has a son called John. The other couple have other children, but in 1841 also have a son called John. I'm trying to establish which James and Mary I want. Can anyone help with this?

I suspect the JOhn recorded with his parents in 1851 is not yours, as he's a farmers servant. the John Sa(u)nders who remains local is later an ag lab.

Your John was a builder in 1861, so I wonder if he's the John Saunders b c1833 who is apprentice carpenter living with Thomas Chudley in Hatherleigh  [Piece 1885, folio 156, p 36]

Thank you for your reply and for pointing out John in 1851. I have tracked the other John who married Ann. I'm thinking the correct James and Mary are the ones who lived in South Street, Hatherleigh. What is a bit strange is that James died in 1860, yet this isn't mentioned on the marriage certificates of his children and he seems to vary between a farmer, labourer, gardener, carpenter and surveyor which isn't helping with the confusion.

Whether the father was dead or alive when a child married is not a question that was required to be asked.  :)

Thanks for pointing out the baptism which I'd missed due to the different spelling. I have the birth certificate of R Sanders (Richard) which confirms Mary Essery as the mother. I think we have the right family, I will just look at the marriages of the children of James and Mary again as the change of jobs seems unusual.
