Jane Tilly nee Ormston.
« on: Monday 22 September 25 14:54 BST (UK) »
My 4xgreat grandparents were John Tilly and Jane Ormston. They married in 1st August 1820 Boughton under Blean.
All census returns up to 1861 has Jane born in Kent, apart from the final 1861 entry, which initially has her born in Northumberland;this has been crossed out and replaced with Durham.
More extensive research and DNA matches suggest she was born in Durham, with Ormston/Ormiston being a well known name in the area.
Ive long wondered what caused Jane to move South, and marry a man from Kent. Please can anyone help with that?Any documents or records that might shine a light on it.

Many thanks.

A few trees have her parents as John and Christian, nee Grey.

One has a baptism as Christiana Grey on 26th December 1767 in Wooler, Northumberland. She was buried in Beadnell, Northumberland, on 7th November 1833, age given as 79.

No indication as to why she moved to Kent. Beadnell is on the coast and some of my wife's ancestors moved from Sunderland to Kent having worked in shipping.

Many thanks for the replies.
I also have the parents down as John Ormston and Christiana Grey. There doesnt seem to be a connection to the sea;Boughton under Blean is a few miles inland, and John Tilly was an ag lab.It looks like her father or brother was there to witness the marriage, but she seems to be the only one who lived in the area. Its a mystery as to how she met him,and why she travelled South to spend her life with him.

Maybe she was a servant in the Kent or even London area.  We tend to think that they did not travel far in those days but some of them did.

I dont think theres any mention on the census of her being a servant. She seems to stay in the Boughton under Blean area her whole life. Her husband was an agricultural labourer from the area.

She did not appear on a census prior to her 1820 marriage.  :-\
