Excellent work, Neale1961.

If Mary Stubbs' birth was registered in the March quarter of 1842, could she be the child whose baptism as Elizabeth was recorded in March 1842? Maybe a mistake by the clerk?

Her birth registration fits exactly with the 9-year-old Mary in the 1851 census.

I see that the family in 1851 lived in Meakins Buildings. Could these have been housing provided by the Meakin Pottery for its workers? And if so might there be archives with records of its workers? See https://www.potteryhistories.com/page70.html - and the Wedgwood archives are in the Victoria and Albert Museum - see https://www.vam.ac.uk/info/va-wedgwood-collection-archives?srsltid=AfmBOortvOsP9OgRJUhYog06lhAO0U3Cbn6Y_zw0VSE4KUgkmwnjy-pm

Thanks a lot Neale1961!

And thank you very much for everyone's help!

Think that, on balance, her being the son of Robert Stubbs and Catherine Littler (and brother of John Stubbs) is the most likely scenario.

The family moving to Scotland briefly in the 1840s seems to make sense with what was going on with the riots at the time

John Stubbs born 1855 in Glasgow, working as a potter, with siblings born in Scotland
1881 census Burslem

I WISH that web sites that provide so-called transcriptions of the census would refrain from interpolating (dis)information which is not in the original document. The actual census doesn't of course, give his year of birth, the UK census never does so. It says that he was 26. Since the 1881 census was taken on 3 April 1881, this means that he was more likely to have been born in 1854 than in 1855.

There are birth records of three siblings, William 1857, Mary 1859 and Robert 1861, in the Scottish records. FS says their mother's maiden name was Mary Ann Childerhus.
