Elizabeth Stubbs from Glasgow
« on: Monday 22 September 25 13:43 BST (UK) »
Hello,

I'm trying to find a bit more information about the Scottish branch of my family tree.

According to census date (1871, 1881 and 1901) one of my 3x great grandmothers Elizabeth Stubbs was born in Scotland - with 1881 and 1901 specifying Glasgow as her place of birth. Her years of birth on these records range from 1844 to 1848.

Her marriage record to Henry Clorley in Staffordshire, England, in 1867 says that her father was called Robert Stubbs.

However I can not find any concrete details about Elizabeth's birth, any details at all about her father Robert Stubbs or anything about her mum (including name).

I don't really know where to begin with researching Scottish records, so any help will be massively appreciated.

Hopefully I've posted this in the right section, it's my first post after joining!

I don't see anything obvious in Scotland either.

What was Robert's occupation, and does the marriage record say whether or not he was deceased at the time of Elizabeth's marriage? What was Elizabeth's address?

Also, who were the witnesses at the marriage?
Never trust anything you find online (especially submitted trees and transcriptions on Ancestry, MyHeritage, FindMyPast and other commercial web sites) unless it's an image of an original document - and even then be wary because errors can and do occur.

This is from the North British Daily Mail (a Glasgow paper) of Saturday 10th January 1863.

Fire. - On Thursday afternoon fire was discovered
to have broken out in the printing ink manufactory of
Mr Robert Stubbs, situated at 98 Centre Street, The
city and district engines were soon on the spot, and
succeeded in subduing the flames before much damage
was done. The origin of the fire is unknown.

Might not be him. There is always the possibility of a Stubbs hiding as Stobbs, Stobo etc. Stubbs is not a common Scottish name, so the family may have moved north to Glasgow for a short time before heading south again.

Following possible witness at Elizabeth’s marriage

John STUBBS married Mary Ann CHILDERHOUSE in 1850 Glasgow
John was born abt 1830 in Stoke
1851 census
https://www.freecen.org.uk/search_records/5a150abcf4040b9d6e1566cf/john-stubbs-1851-lanarkshire-glasgow-1830-?locale=en
1861 census

John was the son of Robert STUBBS, a potter and Catherine (nee LITTLER) who were living in Wonstanton in 1841 census.
https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:MQTZ-KDB?lang=en

I can only find a baptism for the son William in 1836 at the Methodist Chapel, Shelton, Staffordshire.
Perhaps other Methodist records are not online.

The father Robert Stubbs was born abt 1807 and died in Burslem in June 1850.

Had they been in Scotland between 1841 and 1850? His son, John married there.

Robert's widow, Catherine is in Burslem in 1851 census.
She has a daughter Elizabeth born abt 1844 in Burslem (not Scotland  ???), William born 1836, Mary born 1842 and Robert born 1848.
The 1851 census entry is split across a page turn
https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:SGLY-WDM?lang=en
and
https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:SGLY-WD3?lang=en

Catherine remarried in 1853 to John POWELL.
Her children Mary and Elizabeth Stubbs are with her in the 1861 census in Smallthorne but the daughters are under the surname Powell.

Smallthorne is just a mile from Tunstall where ELizabeth married.
Milligan - Jardine – Glencross – Dinwoodie - Brown: (Dumfriesshire & Kirkcudbrightshire)
Clark – Faulds – Cuthbertson – Bryson – Wilson: (Ayrshire & Renfrewshire)
Neale – Cater – Kinder - Harrison: (Warwickshire & Queensland)
Roberts - Spry: (Cornwall, Middlesex & Queensland)
Munster: (Schleswig-Holstein & Queensland) and Plate: (Braunschweig, Neubruck & Queensland & New York)

Baptism year for the following Elizabeth does not match with the likely birth year of the Elizabeth in the 1851 census at Burlem, but it may be worth a look, even if only to rule it out, as there were potteries situated near Dalkeith in the 1800s:

STUBS
ELIZABETH
STUBS
30/MARCH/1842
DALKEITH WEST UNITED PRESBYTERIAN

As an added note, I have come across many census returns over the years, in which an adult gives a place they likely knew/remembered they lived at as a young child, as their believed place of birth, rather than where records proved, as far as is possible, they were actually born.

Timings would make the above noted baptism in Dalkeith less likely to fit, but regardless, if your Elizabeth was indeed born in Scotland  it is worth also noting then that perhaps the pottery riots and earlier strikes in Burslem in 1842 had persuaded her father, Robert, to move from Burslem for a time in seek of work:

There are English birth registrations for the following children:-

STUBBS, MARY  STUBBS            Mother - LITTLER
GRO Reference: 1838  J Quarter in WOLSTANTON AND BURSLEM UNION  Volume 17  Page 257
This Mary died in 1839

STUBBS, EDWARD                Mother - LITTLER
GRO Reference: 1840  J Quarter in WOLSTANTON AND BURSLEM UNION  Volume 17  Page 287
Edward died in 1841.

STUBBS, MARY              Mother - LITTLER
GRO Reference: 1842  M Quarter in WOLSTANTON AND BURSLEM UNION  Volume 17  Page 310

No birth regos for Elizabeth (1844) or Robert (1848), so maybe the family did move to Scotland for a short while. These dates are too early for Scottish civil registration.
