Not sure where to start!
« on: Saturday 20 September 25 22:10 BST (UK) »
Evening everyone.

For the very first time, Im attempting research in Ireland and not really sure where or how to get started. Just wondering if someone can give me a push in the right direction. Not sure either how census or church records work in Ireland compared to UK regarding coverage etc.

Ive got a William Thomas Philpott born 1908 in Cork. He made his way to England (Hastings/London area) and know a bit about his life here, but theres nothing of his early days in Ireland.

Any advice greatly appreciated.

Thank you.
David.

You are researching the origins of ?-

 * William Thomas PHILPOTT  born 1908 in Cork.

 * What is your source for his birth year and place?

 * What is the earliest evidence you have of him being in England, Hastings/London area?

 * Is he your direct ancestor?

 * Who/when/where  did he marry?

 * When/where did he die

Civil register is at https://www.irishgenealogy.ie/

It’s free

Only one likely birth in Cork. No Thomas.  Does the birth date match your man?

Death Index in England gives his supposed DOB. And using that ive found a William Thomas Philpott in Ireland, Civil Registration Births Index, 1864-1958 on Ancestry. 1908 Cork, Ireland. His marriage certificate in Sussex 1944 doesnt give a father. Not a direct ancestor no. And died Eastbourne registration district 1971.

Thanks.

Is this the man you are researching?

Where do you see him using a second given name?

Can you list all the information on the marriage certificate, 1944.

Do you see him in England before the marriage, 1944?
