1987 It was Eddie Smith from Chester Royal Navy Club - he grew up in the Horse and Jockey

Mrs West was in the Jockey for many years,  her neice Margaret Parry married a Frederick Smith, c 1923.

Good to see that it hasn't gone the way of so many old pubs - let's hope it can continue advertising its wares and stocks the local lager!

It's had its ups and downs,  back in the 70s/80s / 90s it was a real local on the Lager pubs trawl around town. It was full of characters from 18 to 80.  Had some fun nights in there. 🍻🍻🍻🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿 Town isn't the same now, all wine bars and cocktail places.
The old regulars have long gone. The Jockey will never be an old lager pub again but with the amount of interest the town has now due to the  football club it should be taken over  and promoted.

21st May 1910 -person who died was Mrs R George Williams (wife of George Williams) she had a daughter Alice Williams and a sister Mrs Wright

Intrigued to note that the Horse and Jockey, junction of Priory Street and Hope Street, is not marked on this 1872/81 Wrexham town plan while other hostelries further along the street are -

This 1909 map shows a PH, unnamed, at the junction where the Horse and Jockey currently sits and others unnamed to the east.

The 1909 , there is more of the pub actually on Priory Street,  it's only got a small frontage on Hope Street.  It's the only pub left out of all the others on Hope Street.

Bit clearer about the story of the pub after spotting an item which described the Hope Street front end sometimes functioning as a private residence while the Priority Street back end operated as the "Colliers". Just great to see it surviving.

Slater's Directory of N&S Wales etc. 1880 does not record a Horse and Jockey under "Taverns and Public Houses". However, under "Retailers of Beer" it lists -
Humphreys Edward, 32 Hope Street

The 1891 Census shows Harriet Edwards, widow, publican, at the Horse and Jockey, 32 Hope St.

Beerhouses could carry a name but this was often ignored when reporting or mapping.

it down as 32 Hope Street in some census records, a couple also have the name. It`s still at 32 Hope Street now. It had the thatch replaced twice after fires, but looks in need of some TLC at the moment,

Now too sure about the Fred Archer, tale  it was already called the Horse and Jockey when he was born.
I find people just look at directories for names, but I prefer to search in old newspapers. And new ones thanks to you poeple.

It`s Harriet Humphreys b Brymbo on Ancestry . Her husband was Edward
On 24 June 1890 Edward Humphreys died at the Horse and Jockey, he was aged 67.

There's a great article in the Wrexham Advertiser, 1 Sep 1883, of a Temperance petition against renewing the licences of 17 drinking establishments in Wrexham (available on Welsh newspapers). Edward Humphrey's, Horse and Jockey, in particular singled out. In the end all were granted.

So, by 1883 the pub was being recognised as the Horse and Jockey.
