newspaper look up pease.
« on: Yesterday at 15:04 »
I am researching the Horse and Jockey. 32 Hope Street Wrexham.
I have lots of information from the newspapers up to early 1900s.
These later ones I found on the British newspapers Archives but I don`t subscribe.
Could  anyone please take a look. The OCR is not good but it`s limited anyway.
I`m wondering who died in 1910. Who was Eddie in 1987.
Thankfully the 1984 plans never  took place and it`s still a pub.
Thanks

Good to see that it hasn't gone the way of so many old pubs - let's hope it can continue advertising its wares and stocks the local lager!

Converted from three cottages in the 1700s with a thatched roof still in 1974.
This pic from The Liverpool Daily Post, 27 Mar 1974 shows it unchanged today.

Intrigued to note that the Horse and Jockey, junction of Priory Street and Hope Street, is not marked on this 1872/81 Wrexham town plan while other hostelries further along the street are -

This 1909 map shows a PH, unnamed, at the junction where the Horse and Jockey currently sits and others unnamed to the east.

Wonder why it didn't qualify to be listed on the town plan?

That's great,  I had Henry Hughes who died there, but wasn't sure if she married Thomas Jones. Mind you there was a Hughes stepson.
That confirms it.  Thanks.
