Wilmont/Willment family Curry Mallet
« on: Saturday 20 September 25 13:07 BST (UK) »
I'm researching my wife's Willment family from Curry Mallet. Francis Wilmont died in 1807, but I have so far not found a birth record for him on any of the usual databases. He married Elizabeth (Betty) Colins in West Hatch in 1798. She was born in 1777, so Francis may have been born around 1775 perhaps. Any clues or suggestions welcome. Thanks

The marriage register says they were "both of West Hatch" but there is only one Francis baptized in West Hatch, in 1775, and he is said to be illegitimate and aged 27 (Francis Bryant) !

Unless, of course, Francis was just living/working in West Hatch before his marriage; or the vicar/curate forgot to record his baptism!

Have you got names of all Francis's children? That can often give a clue as to parent's names. Being of a specified parish only means that they resided there for the three weeks prior to marriage, he could have been born anywhere. Wil(l) mo/ent is not a common name. IME rarer surnames can have a large variety of spellings. Have you looked for possibilities under the more common Wil(l)mot(t) ?
Berks / Oxon: Eltham, Annetts, Wiltshire (surname not county), Hawkins, Pembroke, Partridge
Dorset / Hants: Derham, Stride, Purkiss, Sibley
Yorkshire: Pottage, Carr, Blackburn, Depledge
Sussex: Goodyer, Christopher, Trevatt
Lanark: Scott (soldier went to Jersey CI)
Jersey: Fowler, Huelin, Scott

Hi, thanks for your reply. Yes I have the children (William, Nicholas, Samuel, Rachel, Francis and John) and have tried all variations I can think of including Wilmo(t)t, etc.

you say Betty was born in 1777, is that from her baptism? If so, what were her parent's names? ( to hopefully eliminate them from the list of children

I can see the Bapts of Samuel 1802  West Hatch, born 1800 and Curry Mallet;
Rachel 1805 born 1803
Francis 1805 born 1805
John 1807

I cant see one for Nicholas??

Burials
St Andrew, West Hatch
RACHELL Willment 03 Aug 1802
SAMUEL Willment  26 Dec 1819 age 69 (1750) abode North Curry*

Interestingly there is a NICHOLAS Willment that married 29 May 1805 St Andrew

Possible Brother for Francis?

To me Rachel/Samuel above may be the Parents of Francis.

All above on FreeREG

Trish :)

Betty Colins was born in 1777 in Stoke St Mary, daughter of Moses and Betty. Following the death of first husband Francis Wilmont she remarried to James Palfrey. As Elizabeth Palfrey she was buried in Curry Rivel in 1869. The census of 1851 and 1861 confirm her place of birth ast Stoke St Mary in 1777.

Nicholas Wilmont was baptised in West Hatch on 30 June 1799.

Thanks to all for your interest and suggestions
