Family Trees on Publisher
« on: Yesterday at 11:20 »
When I started making our family tree back in the 1980s I used Publisher and although hardware and software moved on I have always been able to update my originals which now go to many, many pages.

Husband and I are now getting rid of our large, steam-driven computers for laptops and I have a MacBookAir.  Publisher won't work and although I have PDFed all my trees so I can read them I cannot update them which is necessary as the family continues to grow.

I also think the size of my tree may have outgrown being on A4 Publisher pages and am looking for an alternative.  I don't, generally, need to print the tree but do send relevant sections to anyone in the family who has an update:  birth, marriage, death.

Any advice, help etc. grateful received!

There is Affinity Publisher which via a third party App like MarkzPortal can import Microsoft Publisher files (at least that is what Google says so do check it out further).

Affinity Publisher runs on Windows and Mac.

There is also Libre Office whose Draw App can import Pub files and it runs on Windows and Mac.

As it is free I suggest giving it a try on your Windows PC before you scrap it and save the file to a USB stick.

Another free publishing program which will run on a Mac is called Scribus.

Good suggestions above.  I have also been contacted with the suggestions of Libre software and Family Tree Maker which I will investigate but interested to know if anyone here has experience of them on a Mac.

Thanks, again.

As you have already "PDF'd" your publisher files this opens several other alternatives
Apple Preview - part of the MacOS allows viewing and minor editing facilities for PDF files
Skim a free viewer which allows annotations to be made (never used this personally)
LibreOffice Draw also allows viewing and annotating of PDf files.

There are also several paid pdf editors available.
