Jemima Elizabeth Brown and Walter Brown - Keighley after 1901

Hello Rootschatters,

After a considerable absence I have decided to try and complete two missing  facts in my family tree.

Firstly Jemima Elizabeth (Elizabeth Jemima) Brown last sighted at 10 Lawkholme Lane, Keighley, West Riding Yorkshire in the 1901 Census.  I have her census disposition at each census 1841-1901. She is referred to variously as Elizabeth or Jemima E.
Baptised in 1831 at Uppingham she was married to Walter William Brown who died on 20 May 1900.
Walter and Jemima had two sons David Brown born 1865 and Walter Brown born 15 May 1872 died unknown.
Walter William Brown died 20 May 1900 and David Brown died 4 July 1902 are both interred at Utley Cemetery along with David's wife Mary (David and Mary were childless) who died in 1942.
These three are recorded on the headstone at Utley Cemetery.  Perhaps Jemima was also interred there but the headstone was not inscribed

I have been unable to locate the death of Jemima Elizabeth Brown after 1901 and the indexes did not provide any assistance.

Also I have been unable to locate the census disposition of Walter Brown in 1901. In the 1891 Census he is recorded as an "agent for pictures" with his parents at 8 Lawkholme Lane.
Could this mean he went to America? And his mother went there too?
I have investigated a number of potential marriages of Walter Brown (Dean, Vanham, Mattocks) but these have been eliminated.

A death  appeared promising - Walter Brown a grocer and beer retailer aged 40  of 24 Belgrave Road Keighley.  (March Q 1912 Keighley 9A, 267) died 17 February 1912 wife Annie.  This was discounted at the time for reasons underneath.

There are some compelling records relating to the imprisonment for one month of one Walter Brown in HMP Wakefield in 1902 for drunk and disorderly and wilful damage - a showman of Keighley aged 30.


25 June 1912 imprisoned in Keighley PS for one month for stealing skirts and again on 13 November 1912 in Bingley PS for 3 months for stealing an overcoat plus 19 breaches of the Inebriates Act under warrant on 23 December 1913 and a court acquittal on 5 January 1914.
The clincher for me is in this latter Leeds court document where is described as an Upholsterer aged 41. His mother was an upholsterer.

I would very much like someone with fresh eyes to cast their wisdom over the preceding information and perhaps provide some direction as to how I might progress it and even rule a line under it.

It is likely I may have to shell out $ on the following:
Possible death June Q 1941 Walter Brown aged 68 Leeds 9b, 619
Possible death March Q 1947 Walter Brown aged 74 Bradford 2B, 318.
If Walter was so fond of the bottle at 41 I cannot imagine him living to such an age.

Have you checked on 1921 census and 1939 records

He was summoned for being drunk in August 1902 occ Labourer - address given was Lawkholme Lane -it was his 8th offence

A report a year later for drunkeness (if it is him) says his mother is very Ill

Another report of drunkeness March 26th 1903 has the same address and the occupation is Upholsterer

It looks as though he could be the Walter Brown described as phrenologist who is drunk in Keighley on several occasions

There's a tree on Ancestry that suggests the Jemima Brown death in Scarborough district Q3 1909. She's the right age. No idea why she'd be there unless she was admitted to some sort of institution

There is a probate record for that Jemima in Scarborough and it does not seem to be her.
She is a widow of a market gardener.
There is a a census entry in 1901 for probably the same woman in Scarborough.

I can't see the early house numbers for Lawkholm(e) Lane in 1911, they seem to start at Bridge House followed by no 11.  They were previously living in house numbers prior to 11.

Firstly thank you all for your replies.
The following are my reactions:

Jemima Brown of Scarborough - I purchased this death certificate 14 years ago and was able to immediately eliminate her - she was the widow of Richard Brown late of Lincolnshire.

I have checked 1921 and 1939 census records - the 1939 record provided this promising lead

Walter Brown born 11 May 1872, aged 67, residence 4 Binks Fold, Bradford
occupation Stuff Merchants Clerk with Ethel aged 47 and Louis aged 16. However on his marriage certificate with Ethel Mattocks he was described as a widower and his father was described as Miles Thomas Brown. Hence I eliminated this.

Relatives in Hackney, London.  Nil close relatives that I am aware of.  However

I neglected to say that David Brown died in Burnley Registration District in 1904 - he was a resident of Nelson in 1901. His widow Mary died in the Blackburn Registration District in 1942 (she was a resident of Oxenhope in 1911.

Walter Brown the dipsomaniac is almost certainly our wanted man Walter Brown and this might require investing in some death certificates to obtain closure.

I am getting the sense I might have to take a punt on some selective West Riding and Lancashire death certificates from 1903 onwards under the ubiquitous name of Elizabeth Brown.

Or I might decide that as it is highly likely there were no descendants I might leave that twig incomplete.
