The Fife and Forfar Yeomanry recruited in the North around Aberdeen, Dundee and Inverness. They were only a company between the wars but were raised back up to regimental strength in 1939 and formed a second regiment in the same year. As your man was 20 in 1939 then this may be when he volunteered. The fact he is wearing a pre war tunic suggests this was taken in 1939 before battledress was issued. It does suggest he joined the Territorials rather than was conscripted. This means he was probably living in their recruiting area. Does that tie in with anything you know?
The 1st F&F Yeomanry were at Dunkirk whilst the 2nd did not see action until France in 1944. His service record would tell you which one he was in and where he fought. They were an armoured recconaissance regiment based in armoured cars and light tanks.
