Who was Elspet Ritchie from that 1841 census? I know it says spinster, but I wonder if that is wrong.
An Elspeth RITCHIE married William COWE in 1791 in Marnoch. She had a son named James Cowe / Ritchie born in 1788 before marriage.

Here is the baptism on Freereg for James Allan/ Cowie. The notes state " in fornication before the session". So that was certainly before any marriage!

The baptisms for Jane and Peter have father's surname transcribed as Allen.

The baptism transcripts on Freereg for Ann, Margaret, David, Alexander and Barbara all have " registered 31 Dec 1855" in the notes. It would be of help to know exactly what this means! Additionally, apart from Barbara's, the Freereg transcripts all record the names of witnesses. I wonder if it would be worth looking at one or two of the siblings baptisms on Scotland's People to see the precise wording.

William

What a shame there are no kirk session records around these dates - it would have been interesting.
