Here is the baptism on Freereg for James Allan/ Cowie. The notes state " in fornication before the session". So that was certainly before any marriage!

The baptism transcripts on Freereg for Ann, Margaret, David, Alexander and Barbara all have " registered 31 Dec 1855" in the notes. It would be of help to know exactly what this means! Additionally, apart from Barbara's, the Freereg transcripts all record the names of witnesses. I wonder if it would be worth looking at one or two of the siblings baptisms on Scotland's People to see the precise wording.
