Burial Certified

I was looking for information on a woman called Hariet Stenton born in the Chesterfield Union Workhouse to a single parent Liza.  There is a burial record from St Thomas', Brampton, Derbyshire dated 21 Mar 1903 that may be her.  But in the parish record, where the vicar usually puts his signature, there is a note “Certified by Walter Gee”  Can anyone tell me what this means and under what circumstances do some burials need certification?

Do you have a copy of her death cert?  A digital copy is £3 & may possibly give a clue

No, I do not have a death certificate, but I might have to get one if nobody can answer the question.

I think it means that the burial didn't need a vicar. Could Walter GEE be a relative?


On the following page it has a burial for Arthur Edgar BRADSHAW. The entry says "Certified under burials Amdt Act by A BRADSHAW"

The Burial Amendment Act 1880 allowed non- conformists (ie non C of E) to be buried in accordance with their own beliefs in Church burial Grounds. This Act was partially replaced by the Burial  Act 1900 but the basic tenets remained the same.

Elizabeth was Eliza's younger sister.  It does cause confusion.  I will have to double check but I think newspaper report is incorrect as Elizabeth was married in 1859.  But thanks that is useful information.
