Marriage recorded in two places, same date?
« on: Tuesday 16 September 25 17:01 BST (UK) »
Hi everyone,

Not a request for specific searching help but was just curious about an ancestor's marriage that was recorded in two different churches on the same date. They're not banns, but actual marriage entries (I found the originals on FindMyPast). I've not seen this before and wondered if anyone with more experience has seen it before? Is it quite common? Sorry if a daft question, I tried to google it but nothing comes up (only stuff about banns in different parishes).

John Mockett m. Jane Safferie (Saffery) on 30 June 1720 - recorded in both Fordwich, Canterbury (by licence) and Harty, Sheppey.

Thank you!

It is odd, isn't it? I wonder if it's just an error but I can't think how or why.

I maybe quite wrong but is it possible the lived in different Parishes.

They were married by licence, so not after Banns.one image is from Canterbury Cathedral archives
And the other from Kent History and Library Centre so I suspect they may have lived in different Parishes and the marriage has been recorded in both.

John was from Stone Faversham and Jane from Harty.

Hi Jebber, I suppose what I found strange is it was recorded at all in the one they didn't physically get married in - I didn't realise that happened. But if that's what happens sometimes that's useful to know too :)

Copies were always made, known as the Bishops Transcripts, that were sent to the Bishop.

There is a ? After the entry in the Fordwich records.

If they had been married after BANNS they would have been read and recorded in both churches.

I've attached the records I've got, they don't seem to be bishops transcripts but not sure?

(Need to scroll to the right as it's on the right hand side)

Those are what I looked at. Did you notice the Question mark against the Harty entry ?
