Rachel Cohue - Guernsey connection?
« on: Tuesday 16 September 25 08:18 BST (UK) »

Hi,

I'm keen on tracing my family tree and found a possible connection with Guernsey, but I know absolutely nothing about the Channel Islands.

My ancestors were:
Patrick Cooney & Rachel Cohue

The mother's maiden name was recorded in the baptism of her son, James Cooney, in 1823 in Manchester.

Their other children, I couldn't find any Baptisms, but on the census returns, they were born in Roscommon, Ireland. A daughter, Mary Cooney, was born in 1819 in St John's, New Brunswick, Canada.

I thought Patrick had been in the Army and moved around, and Rachel was probably Irish.

I found the 1851 census, Rachel Cooney, born about 1785 in Guernsey, living in Manchester. I searched on the internet for the surname Cohue, and the majority of records from Guernsey had slight variations, eg, Choe Cohu, etc

I can't find a marriage entry, and only James Cooney, who was baptised in Manchester.

I'm wondering if Rachel's family were actually from Guernsey or if her father was in the Army?

Any ideas would be fantastic. I'm totally lost.

Regards
Adrian

According to Mary Cooney's marriage to Owen Williams her father was Patrick Cooney occ Weaver.
I see he is not with Rachel and daughter Margaret (age20 bn Ireland) in 1841 Chorlton

ADDED Margarets marriage also says he was a weaver

I thought Patrick had been in the Army and moved around

I think that is quite likely

This is interesting, and the same surname spelling, I'll investigate further.

Thank you
