Ancestry DNA...no longer a match?
« on: Sunday 14 September 25 18:24 BST (UK) »
Hi
My DNA was tested by Ancestry and the results uploaded a while back, about 5 years ago give or take.
My sister tested later.

One of my matches was the daughter of a mutual great grandmother, we'd done the papertrail together and I remember sending her a screenshot of "you have a match!" and  saying something about  DNA does really work, something like that.

Today, and for a while now, she is not a match anymore. I've checked the search parameters etc but however I search (username, shared ancestor name etc) she is according to ancestry NOT a match,
But my sister still is a match (and to me!)

It wouldn't really bother me but when I check my DNA matches, often using Ancestry Family Trees to work out a connection, if a person shows as not a DNA match then I dismiss them and go on to the next,
What I'm really questioning is the reliability of Ancestry's search functiion. They have such an amass of data, is it possible this match now just slips through?
Any thoughts?

Hi,

You haven’t said what cM your match was at, was it the lower end of what you might expect, I am sure Ancestry are always tweaking their matching algorithms.
  You could always ask?

Hi David
Thankyou for your interest.
I can only state now what the relationship of my sister is according to DNA, mine no longer being visible!
They share 47 cM ...with Ancestry's relationship calculator as half third cousin which is actually spot on !
It's just the reliabilty I am questioning....if when I am trawling through results and Ancestry states no match, then I ignore.....but it would seem definetly not foolproof!

Do you subscribe to ANCESTRY PRO? It cost more money, of course, but it shows lower cM matches. If you don’t subscribe, you might look for a special offer someday and give that a try. If this person and you share under 20 cM, it will show the match on ANCESTRY Pro DNA, but not necessarily on regular ancestry DNA.

Hi,

I would put a ticket in and ask Ancestry. If you are using the App, I think Ancestry broke something when they implemented Pro Tools. If I look on the app I have no shared matches, if I look on the Website I do, I have commented on this to them

The app does not include Pro tools.  As a result only shared matches of 20cM and above appear on the app.

Hi again
Do you mean "app" in the sense of only on a mobile phone? I only use the website proper as it were
No I do not have Pro. Nevertheless, I can still view lower cM matches down to 6 cM, indeed some of my lower matches have sometimes proved more helpful than the higher ones!

Yes I was referring to the app on my  phone ( via Google play). Your list of matches is the same on the app and the website. Pro tools provide more shared matches with your matches as there is not a 20cM cut off . Those shared matches below 20cM do not show on the app. Hope this clarifies.

ANCESTRY discontinued showing matches under 8 cM some years ago unless you had put a note in like, “ possible Smith match” or whatever. The ANCESTRY PRO shows matches down to 6 cM.
