James Stone christened 1798
« on: Saturday 13 September 25 17:54 BST (UK) »
I am posting for a friend.  We have found James Stone baptism at Catholic Church 30.12.1798 in Manchester parents Luke and Ellzabeth nee Cunningham.  He had a daughter Ann Stone christened at Manchester Cathedral 23.05.1824 daughter of James and Ellen giving his profession of hairdresser.  The profession was also given on his daughter's 3 marriages. There was also a son William also christened at M/c Cathedral 1821

Can't find a marriage to Ellen, any census or demise.   Luke and Elizabeth are also elusive.

There was a James Stones and Ellen also in Blackburn but this is not the ones of this history.  They were born and lived in the area.

Can anyone help.   ??? ???

Are you sure you have the right baptism?  If you can't find him on any census how do you know his birthyear/birthplace?

The fact that his children were born in Manchester does not prove he was - nor that he married there.

His children were baptised C of E which could mean that Ellen was non-Catholic.

I think that was the only baptism that was found in Manchester for James Stone?  Can't understand why there aren't any census for James Stone and Ellen.  Ann didn't marry the first time until 1842 but not found her on any census for 1841

Anns address at marriage was 'Red Bank'
In 1841 Redbank reference is in the region of H0107/573 bk 3 f5 page 5

Have you discounted the Ann Stone showing as 15 living at Hanging Bridge
H0107/573 bk4 f44 p40 - she is living with Edward and Mary Gentel

Ann couldn't find the 1841 census for her.  She married William Foulds (born 1817) in 1824 and he  17.01.1842 at Manchester Cathedral.  10.10.1849 she married Daniel Finn again at Manchester Cathedral.  However there is something fishy here as he was an inmate on the 1861 census but she had remarried again 25.10.1858 to Thomas Worrall at All Souls Ancoats. When she married the registrar who wrote the marriage cert had problems he wrote Foulds, crossed it out wrote something else and crossed out and ended up putting Knowles?  Father on all three was James Stone hairdresser.  It was as though Daniel Finn hadn't existed. She had two children with William Foulds Elizabeth Ellen 23.04.1843 Manchester and James 22.06.1845 in Stockport.  The only census found for her was 1871 when she was married to Thomas Worrall.  When Elizabeth E her daughter married it had William Foulds as her father and Thomas Worrall signed as witness.

1824 Lancaster Directory has
James Stone, hair dresser, at 30 High street Manchester
https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:3Q9M-C9BT-H9D3-6

Street listing here, where we can also see a James Stone at 10 Greengate, Salford
https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:3Q9M-C9BT-H9D9-9

By the way, Pigot's 1824-5 Manchester also lists Greengate James as a hairdresser (there is a great plan/map of Manchester at the start of that directory)

Thank you Johnwarrn for the directories.  Were there no children mentioned if this is where they where living?  They had a son William 1821 and a daughter Ann 1824 ? Greengate Salford is on the border with Manchester.
