LEWIS HENRY VAUGHAN WW1 1916
« on: Saturday 13 September 25 16:48 BST (UK) »
Can anyone help?
LEWIS HENRY VAUGHAN died on 6 Aug 1916 after serving with the Royal Welsh Fusiliers. Aged 23, he lived and died at 59 High Street, Tredegar. He was the son of Elizabeth Ann Jones (formerly Vaughan).
At the 1901 Census he was  living in Tredegar with his father William, mother Elizabeth Ann, and siblings Thomas, Ellen and Rees. Thomas died in Germany in 1914 while serving with the Cheshire Regt. (was he perhaps POW ?)
Lewis is entitled to War Grave designation- if proof of burial can be found.
Does anyone know where Lewis Henry Vaughan is buried?  Any information would be gratefully received.

May be a red - herring but sister Ellen/Eleanor Vaughan married Lewis Thomas Harries in 1907 Bedwelty Monmouthshire.

The obituary for Eleanor Harries gives the burial place as Cefn Golau Cemetery ?

Thank you, Sandra -that's a good start point. Looks like there is still a Vaughan Bros, Funeral Directors , in Tredegar- worth a phone call come Monday.

Thanks for your reply. I have used that site in the past and it can be helpful but, sadly, not in this case.

Not your main question I know, but yes, Thomas died while a prisoner of war. If you go to the CWGC website page for information about the Berlin South Western Cemetery and scroll down to the historical section you will find that the 1,176 men from WW1 interred there were brought together in 1922-23 from 146 temporary burial sites across Germany including those of 19 POW camps.

Thomas's service record has survived although it was quite badly burnt. However among the papers which have survived is a letter to the War Office dated 30 November 1914 from a Rees Vaughan inquiring about Thomas. The writer says he had received a post card on 6th November from Thomas saying that he had been wounded and was a prisoner of war. A note has been added to the file saying that Pte Thomas Vaughan died from inflammation of the lungs at Doberitz, Germany on 11 Nov 1914. There is then an official notification from the German authorities sent via the US Embassy in Berlin, notifying his death.

There was a prisoner of war camp on the Western edge of the Döberitz military training area in Brandenburg. Thomas had been wounded in the back by shrapnel and had a gun shot wound to the hand. The infection of his lungs was presumably the result of the shrapnel wound. From the date he was reported missing it would appear that he was wounded and captured during the Battle of Mons in August 1914.

His medals and commemorative scroll were sent to Mrs Elisabeth A Jones of 18 Island Street, Cwm [remainder of address illegible].

Thanks, Andy. I'm sure the answer lies in Tredegar. I will continue the search and post the result.
