  Which part of South Africa did they go to? I have a daughter in law from there, whose ancestor went from East Yorkshire to Natal in 1850. There may have been an emigration scheme.
  (Another post has just beaten me which seems to confirm the Natal connection.)

Top of the Hill. Yes in 1850 there were a number of emigration schemes from England to Natal.
In 1850, English emigration to South Africa occurred through a combination of private and government-backed schemes, such as the Byrne Emigration and Colonization Company, which facilitated settlers for economic opportunity and colonial expansion, particularly to Natal. Assisted migration aimed to settle the colonies with European labour. I am distantly related to the Smiths from Bedale.
The Haidee ship arrived in Natal, South Africa, in 1850, carrying settlers from Yorkshire, England, to establish the village of York Wesleyan. The ship's passengers included the Smith family, whose daughter, Catherine Jane Smith, married Charles Bird Boast.

I have a feeling the Redshaws arrived on the Haidee. Looking for a passenger list. No Redshaw family on the Haidee.

Yes my Redshaw's came from Kilham. My GGM was one of them out there..but she returned to England following her marriage to my GGF who was a soldier. 
Often wonder if I would be there now instead of here! :
