Hello,
I have been trying to locate two particular records for some time now. Specifically, I need assistance with finding a death record for William Lynn and a birth record for his son, James.
William Lynn/ Linn was born in Ireland about 1831. He married Margaret Hagins/ Hagan/ Higgins (named spelled differently on various records) March 13, 1852 at Glastry meeting house in the parish of Innishargie in County Down, Ireland. They had several children most of whom seem to have died in infancy except for the daughter, Margaret, who was born in 1871 in Grangee townland, Donaghadee, County Down.
I know that at some point between 1871 and 1873 they end up in Dalmellington, Ayrshire, Scotland because their daughter, Elizabeth, is born there February 24, 1873 and died a few weeks later.
On her birth and death records it lists their residence as 78 Burnfoothill which along with Lethanhill was built to house workers in the Iron stone mines by the Dalmellington Iron Company. William's occupation was a Laborer. That’s the last I can find of him.
In 1880 his widow, Margaret, marries Crawford Lindsay who is an iron stone miner residing at 138 Lethanhill. The marriage record lists her marital status as Widow. Her address is Lethanhill but the house number is difficult to make out. Almost looks like it is the same as Crawfords.
The 1881 census shows they are still living in Dalmellington, and lists Crawford, his 3 sons and Margaret’s daughter, Margaret Lynn (10, born in Ireland) and James Lynn (5, born in Ayrshire, Dalmellington) but I cannot find a birth record for him. I should also mention they leave Scotland for the US a few years later. Crawford and his eldest son in 1886 and Margaret and the rest in 1887.
I have searched Scotland’s People using variations of spelling of his name, variations of Margaret’s maiden name, leaving it out altogether and even just a first name or last name only.
So either I’m doing something wrong, the record doesn’t exist or he wasn’t born in Dalmellington. I even tried looking at Irish birth records for him just incase they went back there for a time.
If any of you can help solve these two mysteries I would very much appreciate it.
Best Regards,
KC
