Need help finding a death and a birth record
« on: Friday 12 September 25 15:35 BST (UK) »
Hello,

I have been trying to locate two particular records for some time now. Specifically, I need assistance with finding a death record for William Lynn and a birth record for his son, James.

William Lynn/ Linn was born in Ireland about 1831. He married Margaret Hagins/ Hagan/ Higgins (named spelled differently on various records) March 13, 1852 at Glastry meeting house in the parish of Innishargie in County Down, Ireland. They had several children most of whom seem to have died in infancy except for the daughter, Margaret, who was born in 1871 in Grangee townland, Donaghadee, County Down.

I know that at some point between 1871 and 1873 they end up in Dalmellington, Ayrshire, Scotland because their daughter, Elizabeth, is born there February 24, 1873 and died a few weeks later.
On her birth and death records it lists their residence as 78 Burnfoothill which along with Lethanhill was built to house workers in the Iron stone mines by the Dalmellington Iron Company. William's occupation was a Laborer. That’s the last I can find of him.

In 1880 his widow, Margaret, marries Crawford Lindsay who is an iron stone miner residing at 138 Lethanhill. The marriage record lists her marital status as Widow. Her address is Lethanhill but the house number is difficult to make out. Almost looks like it is the same as Crawfords.

The 1881 census shows they are still living in Dalmellington, and lists Crawford, his 3 sons and Margaret’s daughter, Margaret Lynn (10, born in Ireland) and James Lynn (5, born in Ayrshire, Dalmellington) but I cannot find a birth record for him. I should also mention they leave Scotland for the US a few years later. Crawford and his eldest son in 1886 and Margaret and the rest in 1887.

I have searched Scotland’s People using variations of spelling of his name, variations of Margaret’s maiden name, leaving it out altogether and even just a first name or last name only.
So either I’m doing something wrong, the record doesn’t exist or he wasn’t born in Dalmellington. I even tried looking at Irish birth records for him just incase they went back there for a time.

If any of you can help solve these two mysteries I would very much appreciate it.

Best Regards,
                      KC

Have you already ruled out the 1879 Ayrshire death for William Linn aged 52 - mothers maiden name Morton?

Same site - birth 1874 for a James Cochrane Linn in Irvine

Who are her parents on the marriage cert which will give you her maiden name - unless it was Higgins?

1873 birth reg for Elizabeth LYNN shows mmn as Higgins

They can be found in Govan on the 1881 Census

On the Irish marriage record for William and Margaret his father is John Linn (occupation farmer). I don't know his mother's name. Margaret's name on that record is spelled Hagins. Her father is James Hagins (occupation laborer).

On her marriage to Crawford her maiden name is listed as Higgins. Her mother, Mary McGhee.

No. I've never been able to find him on any census or even a death record in the US.

Thank you for trying. I appreciate it.

I couldn't see any records either in the U S A or a death for him in Scotland there is always a chance he was not her son ?
I noticed on the 1900 census Margaret had 12 children and just 2 living have you found all these children

No I've only found 5.

3 were born in Ireland (beginning in 1865) and died in infancy. Margaret, (also born in Ireland, who came to the US with her mother) and lastly, baby Elizebeth who was born and died in Scotland.

Civil birth register records began in 1864 in Ireland. William and Margaret were married in 1852. I think it's likely the other children were born to before 1864 and that's why I can't find them.
