Elizabeth King born about 1790 in Croxton
« on: Wednesday 10 September 25 06:32 BST (UK) »
I'm trying to find the parents of the Elizabeth King, my 3rd great-grandmother. She was married to William Ainger in 1813 at Castle Bytham, Lincolnshire.  The 1861 census states she was born about 1790 in Croxton.

TIA,
Richard

Thank you for the speedy reply.  I'd noticed the different birth places, I think I'd assumed the later census was more accurate.  I know, never assume.  I'm new at this  ;D

This is a pity, as the baptism fitted perfectly.

I think birthplaces on the census can be a matter of potluck sometimes as it so much depended on the writing of the enumerator and the speech/accent and knowledge of the person who gave them the information  :-\

I'm finding that with surnames, likes Ainger.  :o They have very inventive ways of spelling that.  My ancestors appear to work on the land for the most part, so I guess reading and writing was not high on the list of important things to do.

Very much a long shot, but could it actually be Costock, which is in Nottinghamshire but only about 2-miles from the Leicestershire border?

The Baptist registers for Sheepshead/Shepshed, Leics have the following:

Elizabeth King d/o Jonadab King and his wife Ann was born Costock in the County of Nottingham on 5 Feb 1785

Other children were Ann (1787) and Sarah (1790).

Jonadab King of Costock married Ann Oram otp at Shepshed on 7 Jul 1783. He died 25 Jan 1838 at Costock but was buried in the Baptist Chapel Burial Ground, Shepshed.

His will is available to order from the Borthwick Institute in York.

Thanks, this is definitely a possibility.  I'll explore these two possible parents.
