Bastardy Bond Lookup
« on: Monday 08 September 25 21:10 BST (UK) »
Hi all

If anyone has the CD with the Bastardy Bonds for Leicestershire is able to do a check for me I'd really appreciate it.

I am looking for details pertaining to an Amanda Elizabeth Bishop. She was baptised at Lutterworth on 4 Feb 1849 daughter of Ann Bishop. Her mother went on to marry James Mawby 4 months later but I don't know for sure if he was her father. On the off-chance I thought it might be worth checking if there is an entry for her.

Also, Amanda's mother Ann was also illegitimate and was baptised at Peatling Magna on 7 Oct 1827, daughter of Elizabeth. Elizabeth later married a widower John March in 1836. So if there is any mention of Ann too, it would great.

Many thanks in advance.

Alex

I think it is likely Amanda was James Mawbys child given they married so soon after she was born.
This happened more than we would think in those times.

Does she name him as her Father on her M/C?

DNA is the only way you are probably going to solve this.

Trish :)

Thanks Trish

Amanda doesn't actually name James as her father when she married. She dropped the forename Amanda on most records (only her birth, baptism, death and burial use Amanda and her marriage and all census entries she goes by Elizabeth). While she gets called Mawby and referenced as James's daughter on the censuses, when she married Joseph Carter she married as Bishop not Mawby and no father's details are on the marriage certificate.

While my husband shares DNA matches with some people who have Mawby on their trees, it isn't conclusive as it could potentially relate to other lines further back in Gilmorton where that Mawby line centres during the 1800s and 1700s as my husband has other links to families in Gilmorton. Plus a potential line regarding Amanda Elizabeth's Bishop line in Gilmorton married a Mawby. Without some really definitive matches linked to closer relations of James Mawby, it is hard to say for sure. But it is interesting for her to have been brought up by James as Mawby but decide not to use his name/details as her father when she married. James Mawby and her mother Ann are the witnesses to the marriage too, which again you'd think maybe they would have encouraged her to give James as her father.

One day it might be solved with more DNA connections!

Thanks

Alex

Just remembered in re looking at the tree that Ann Bishop also had another illegitimate child before Amanda Elizabeth, called Jane Bishop born 2 Jun 1846, baptised at Lutterworth 28 Jun 1846, she was buried there on 31 Mar 1847. From the baptism and burial the residence is the "Union" so the workhouse.

Jomot, are you able to check to see if there is any entry for Jane in the Bastardy Bonds? I am assuming it is probably a dead end too, but might be worth a look.

Thanks!

The 'bastardy book' CD for 1844-1874 only lists just over 700 cases, and unfortunately there is no mention of any mother with the surname Bishop.

Thanks for your reply and explanation.

So maybe James was not her biological Father then as she married as Bishop and did not name him as her Father.
I had seen the Census entries where she just used Elizabeth.
