William Mather
« on: Sunday 07 September 25 17:09 BST (UK) »
Good afternoon everyone,

I am a little bit stumped and require some help please. I am trying (unsuccessfully) to track a William Mather b - 1829/30, Bolton, Lancashire, to John and Jane (nee Welsley) I have him for the 1841 census and the potentially in 1851 census as a druggist for Dr Samuel Chadwick. Then this is where the difficulties began. Now Dr Chadwick retires in 1863 due to ill health I cannot confirm which is the correct WM in 1861 or 1871 but if 1851 census is right WM may have gotten another job as there's no one I can find listed in further records as a druggist. There's a few WM in the area at the time. I can confirm one 1861 census isn't him - William Mather living at Sharples.

I have check BNA and found an advert for William Mather druggist in 1878 for London and Manchester but I don't want to make assumptions!

Any help will be gratefully received. Have a wonderful day!
B xx

Is it possible to find the one mentioned in 1878 on the 1881 census, not sure how common a name that is.
He may not have continued in that profession.

The 1851 census you have with Samuel Chadwick has a servant called Betsy Mather - did your William have a sibling Betsy?  This one was 29.  Could be a link.

Hi Hun

I did spot that about Betsy. Ive quit for today but will re take another look. I need to sit down and run all the WM in the area at the time and follow where I can place them and eliminate.

 ;)

I'm not sure Betsy is a sibling. 1851 has her as aged 29 and b Blackrod. There's an Elizabeth Mather b c1821 baptised in Blackrod. Parents are Nathan and Alice

Is this your family in 1841. Also is this birth registration that of brother Thomas with a rather unusual spelling?

MATHER, THOMAS       mmn WILLOWSEE
GRO Reference: 1839  J Quarter in BOLTON UNION, COUNTY OF LANCASTER  Volume 21  Page 152

Barlow Street, Bolton, Lancashire, England

John   Mather 40   b Lancashire
Jane   Mather 30   b Lancashire
James Mather 14 b Lancashire
William Mather 12   b Lancashire
Mary   Mather 10 b Lancashire
John Mather 7 b Lancashire
Thomas Mather 2    b Lancashire

added, looking at this family in 1851 census the eldest child recorded was Mary c1833 born Preston. I believe looking at baptisms your William was born Preston, not Bolton, this might help in search.

Quite a few mentions of William Mather, druggist, in London and Manchester, but I can't find him at the address mentioned - 14 Bath Street, Newgate, and 19 Hanging Ditch, Manchester, in 1865.
