Looking for grandfather in 1921
« on: Sunday 07 September 25 09:41 BST (UK) »
Wondering if anyone can find my friend’s grandfather, Gwilym Owen Thomas, on the 1921 census please. He was born in Tranmere (registered in Birkenhead, Cheshire) on 2 June 1906, to William Thomas, stonemason (journeyman) and Catherine Ann, formerly Jones (born in Llanbeblig around 1880). Family know he was orphaned when quite young, but believe he was brought up by an aunt in the Menai Bridge area.
I’ve found him (as Gwillym O Thomas aged 5) with his widowed father William (born around 1873 in Carnarvon) in 1911, at 439 Carnarvon Rd, Bangor.
Catherine Ann died on 28 May 1908 in Llanllechid, Bangor.
I can’t find a likely death for William in the area, and sadly no marriage either to confirm his father. Nor can i find Gwilym in 1921, hence this post. Tried all options i can think of.
Gwilym married Elizabeth Blodwen Owen in St Mary’s church, Llantysilio - Menai Bridge, on 26 Nov 1935, Gwilym living at 42 High Street, Llandysilio, at the time.
Any help much appreciated, thanks.

This looks like the marriage of the family he is with, so could likely be an Aunt.

That’s fantastic, thanks so much Cas. Been tearing my hair out with all options i could think of, ploughing through no first name just surname, both parents dead, but nothing 🙁 the marriage looks great too, will add to tree now. Phew, thanks again.
Just his father’s death to find now, though listed as nephew doesn’t guarantee that his father is dead of course.

Just posting incase relevant..

1921 for Aunt had pob as Arthog, Merionethshire. Looked it up as had not heard of it, came across this census

1891 - https://www.ancestry.co.uk/search/collections/6897/records/569255

1891 - Ynyscynhaiarn, Portmadoc, Caernarvonshire
William Jones 65 Head Denbighshire
Elizabeth Jones 55 Wife, Merionethshire
Elizabeth M Jones   14   Daughter Arthog, Merionethshire
Catherine A Jones 12 Daughter, Arthog
Thomas Jones 67 Father-in-law, Caernarvonshire

I know age is out for Elizabeth Mary, but husband in 1921 was younger. She may have shaved a few years.

1881 - Dolgelley, Merionethshire
William Jones 65 Head Denbighshire
Elizabeth Jones 45 Wife, Merionethshire
Eliza M. Jones 4 Daughter "
Catherine A. Jones   2   Daughter "

Likely birth reg under Dolgelley for both girls with mmn Jones. Which would fit the birth months + 11 for Elizabeth from 1921 (but there are many Jones)

JONES, ELIZABETH  MARY  mmn   JONES
GRO Reference: 1876  S Quarter in DOLGELLEY  Volume 11B  Page 427

JONES, CATHERINE  ANN     mmn JONES
GRO Reference: 1878  S Quarter in DOLGELLEY  Volume 11B  Page 431

Just a few thoughts

That does all look promising Cas, thanks for sharing. The family initially thought Gwilym was brought up by his father’s sister but that didn’t work after you found the 1921. I hadn’t been able to decipher Arthog but did look for anything in Merionethshire. But have found EMJ and husband Griffith (sadly their son was captured by the Japanese in March 1942, released in September 1945, but returned to Anglesey, married, and died there aged 78). Griffith had died in 1940; EM died in 1943, not knowing if her son was alive as he was listed as missing for all those years :(

Apart from Catherine Ann’s age at death (28 in 1908) and not finding a marriage, i was struggling, though found a possible birth and baptism in Llanbeblig, but no sister EM. So many Joneses :(

Thanks again, great help  :)

There is this possible, with others same page. 1891 the family are in the Festiniog reg area, not searched 1901..she could have returned to marry if they stayed in area.? Not sure if this couple married each other, so long shot.

Marriages Jun 1903
Jones    Kate Ann        Festiniog    11b   705
Jones    Maggie        Festiniog    11b   705
Jones    Margaret        Festiniog    11b   705
Thomas    William        Festiniog    11b   705
Williams    Robert        Festiniog    11b   705

Also death for William Thomas would likely be 1911 - 1921. There is a possible Dec Q 1918 Bangor Reg district, b1871. (If he stayed in area)  1921 Griffith Edwards wrote 3 children dependant under 16, so likely father not alive.

You are amazing, thanks again Cas. The family believe Gwilym lost both parents when he was very young (possibly before he was 8) but no likely death using that timeframe. The marriage looks promising though, will see if a parish records exists. So much cheaper than a marriage certificate. I have bought a few of the digital death images, but 2 possible deaths were wrong, will go for that 1918 one once I’ve tracked CA and family in 1901.
