I have had the chance to check my copy of John' birth - his father's occupation IS a shoemaker.

So I think I do have the correct parents.

I assume you mean his baptism, assuming you have the right John Mills.    He did give his fathers occupation as Farmer, Deceased when he married and not Shoemaker

Yes, it conflicts - all else fits. Age place of birth.

Think I may have found him in 1851, living in  "something" Row, St Peters District, St Andrews, Plymouth.

John Wills on FindMyPast and looking at the image the first letter looks the same as the W in William at the bottom of that page
