Can't Find Somebody on 1881 Census
« on: Saturday 06 September 25 12:02 BST (UK) »
Hi,

I'm unable to find my 2nd great grandfather, John Blenkinsopp on the 1881 census. He was born in 1854, and in 1879, he married Eleanor Rodenby at Monkwearmouth. In 1880, he and Eleanor had a daughter, Elizabeth Jane, and they were living at Johnson Street, Monkwearmouth Shore, Durham.

He was a rivetter in the local shipyard, and died on the 18th August 1899. Interestingly, John and his family are on the 1891 and 1871 census, but I'm having some trouble finding him on this census.

If anybody can help me find him, I would be most grateful.

Thank you,

JackB

Just in case you haven’t spotted this: in 1891 their next-door neighbours are George Rodenby and family.

10 November 1888: Sunderland Daily Echo and Shipping Gazette

Quote
DEATH FROM BURNS.
This morning, Mr Coroner Maynard held an inquest at the Willow Pond, Hylton-road, concerning the death of Mary Blenkinsop, aged about four years. — Eleanor Blenkinsop, wife of John Blenkinsop, riveter, residing at 14, Exeter-street, said the burns were purely accidental, and were received whilst at play. —Sarah Rodenby and Sarah Gray also gave evidence. —The jury returned a verdict that the child died through shock, the effect of the burns.

The family was at the same Exeter Street address in 1891. Exeter Street doesn't appear before 1891 in an address search at FindMyPast, but there are a couple of newspaper references to the street slightly before 1881.

Hi Alan,

Thank you very much for your information. Yes, I remember my grandfather telling me the story of Mary Blenkinsopp being burnt. From what I remember, she also had a sister, Sarah who died of Diphtheria in 1896. From what I can gather, prior to 1888, the family was at Johnson Street, from 1888-1896, the family was at 14 Exeter Street, and from 1896, to the death of John in 1899, the family was residing again at 17 Johnson Street.
