Edward Joseph Murray RAMC

My grand uncle Joe Murray was in the Army Medical Corp during the Great War which he never spoke about. He was always know as Joe despite being registered as Edward Joseph.
He had a mark on top of his head which I was told because he was hit by a mortor?
He was born in October 1896 and would have been living at 107 Foyle Road, Derry (London-Derry) in Ireland, when he joined up. His deceased parents were Edward Murray and Catherine Eames.

He spent the rest of his life working as a medical orderly

Any help as to his military record would be appreciated.

There are army pension record index cards for Edward Joseph Murray otherwise Joseph Murray, RAMC 7254869.  He also served with Labour Corps (232221) and the Royal Inniskilling Fusiliers (10703).

His medal records are under Labour Corps 232221 and RIF 10703. The 1914-15 Star medal roll shows that he disembarked in France  on 9 June 1915, and was discharged on 11 March 1919.

His army papers appear not to have survived. Most were destroyed by enemy action in WW2.

The RAMC number that ShaunJ has quoted, i.e. 7254869, is a post war service number. Seven digit service numbers were introduced in 1920. This would suggest that his service record has survived and is with the Ministry of Defence. Such records are being handed over to the National Archives to be digitised and (eventually) put online (probably via Ancestry).

Well spotted AllanUK.  I see now that J Murray 7254869 is on the MoD FoI list of soldiers for whom they still held records, who were discharged from the armed forces after 1920, and born before 1901. So the records have survived (if this is the right man).

You forgot to mention that he was born in Belfast on 29 October 1896. His father Edward, a constable in the RIC.

That is Correct his father Edward Murray was a member of the R.I.C.
