Edwards in Cheshire on census
« on: Friday 05 September 25 14:42 BST (UK) »
Hi

I am trying to fill in a few blanks and I'm looking for Hugh Edwards b1839 in Greenfield, Flintshire in Cheshire somewhere on the 1871 census. His wife was Elizabeth bc1841, and she was born in Chester, Cheshire. He worked on boats so he may be seperate to his wife, but I am hoping they are together.

Thanks for any help in locating him/them.

Thank you very much Kay99. I will check out the son now and see if they are on the 1881.

Thanks again, it is much appreciated.

I thought looking for him would be easy, I can't find a suitable birth for George.  :-\

Post 1871 I think things get rather complicated.   I spent a while yesterday looking at a Hugh Edwards with a birthplace also listed as 1839 at Greenfield, Flintshire who was living in Birkenhead in 1881-1911 and also  in  the 1881 recorded on a vessel.   I think that this is the same Hugh you have in 1861/71 with wife Elizabeth nee Jones

I think by 1873 Elizabeth had died and Hugh  remarried a widow Mary Sharpe nee Magee in Birkenhead 17 Jan 1873 with Hugh listed as a widower and Mariner age 32 with father Evan Edwards.  They have  two children then by 1881  Hugh's second wife had died and Hugh is living with a third partner with name Ann as below in Birkenhead

Hugh Edwards   43 Flatman  b Greenfield, Flintshire
Ann Edwards   38
Hugh Edwards   8
Thomas Edwards   6
Charles Edwards   2
William John Edwards
Thomas Eaton   12 Stepson
Mary Ann Eaton   9 Stepdaughter
Samuel Henry Eaton   6  Stepson

Do you have access to Anc?   This tree lists the family roughly in 1881 and beyond http://www.rootschat.com/links/01tze/

I can't see a definate birth for George or him in 1881 but in later census years he appears to have been a sailor

Hope this makes sense and sorry it is complicated :-\

Kay

Thank you very much for all this information Kay99! It does make sense. I don't have access to ancestry. It would be great to see where George in 1881 was as he wasn't with his father, but sometimes we just never get to know.

Thanks so much for spending some time on my query, I appreciate it.

Sadly George Edwards is not a unusual name and if George became a sailor he may well have been at sea in 1881.  In 1891  there is a George Edwards b 1861 Chester who was lodging in Birkenhead and listed as a sailor  :-\

I think Hugh was counted twice in the 1881 census and was at sea as below on the vessel Martha

Charles Gerrard   40 Master
Hugh Edwards   42 Mate Flatman b Greenfield, Flintshire
Elizabeth Gerrard   39  Masters wife  b Greenfield, Flintshire
Charles Gerrard   1
Mark Reynolds   18

Kay

Added - I think Elizabeth Gerrard was Hugh's married sister

Yes, if George had had a middle name it might have been easier.

Thanks for the extra information - the 1891 could be a possible.

It's interesting that Hugh was recorded twice, rather than it being two different people! Being with his sister helps.

Thanks very much for your help - I'm pleased to have this information.
