Bent Family from Whaddon, Buckinghamshire
« on: Friday 05 September 25 09:45 BST (UK) »
Hi,

I am hoping someone could point me in the right direction to establish what happened to this family?

I have Henry Bent (baptised 21 March 1713 (father Henry) and Elizabeth (wife). I have no further information on their marriage or other details for Henry nor Elizabeth.

Family Search tells me they had 5 children - Henry 24 June 1750, Susannah 12 Jan 1752, Anne 17 Nov 1754, James 27 Feb 1757 and Mary 12 Feb 1759.

Any help would be welcome.

Thank you

Alan

Good Afternoon
Not so sure of that son Henry before the marriage. There is a Henry s of John and Mary bapt 6th Dec 1747.
Henry and Elizabeth surrender some land on the Manorial Court Record of 1752 .So Manorial Records at Buckinghamshire Archives may help.

Possible burials/deaths for the couple.
Henry Bent 2.6.1791 poor
Henry Bent 29.11.1793 carpenter.
Elizabeth widow 29.10.1801

But going back to Henry's baptism 21.3.1713 ,I can't see a mother on there, although I'm only looking at transcripts.
None of the parish records of that date seem to have a mother.
So children of Henry Bent at Whaddon

Alice 28.1.1699-16.3.1703
Daniel 13.11.1705 who seems to be a butcher .
Henry 21.3.1713
Anne Underwood Brent buried 17.12.1716 d of Anne.(She's the 3rd wife)

Henry senior seems to have been buried 30.5.1720 at Whaddon housekeeper (perhaps more likely horse keeper)
They seem to be quite a lot of wives.
Wife 1  Elizabeth buried 8.1.1703 (can't see the marriage)
marriage 25.1.1704 to 2  Mary Daniel bapt 26.5.1684 d of John Daniel buried 12.6.1714
marriage 3 15.8.1715 to Anne Underwood who went on to marry Edward West 26.7.1725 at Calverton .She was buried 13.4.1731

A Poll book for 1713 has an entry for Henry Bent at Whaddon of Stony Stratford.
This seems to be him and suggests he is quite rich.

Looking at Stony Stratford

Henry Bentt bapt 29.3.1675 son of Nicholas Bentt
Siblings Elizabeth 2..2.1669 ,William 9.9.1672-12.9.1672,Robert 9.9.1672 and Ann buried 29.4.1677.

Unfortunately again I can see no marriage for Nicholas.
There are no Bents for 1640 Protestation in Whaddon so it fits they came from somewhere else.
I can't see the Hearth tax online for either parish.

Hi,

Thank you all for your replies - It will take a little time to assess all the details and try to bring the tree forward.

In my tree I have previously come across a Henry being called Harry in various censuses so I think I can, with good precedent, consider Henry and Harry to be one and the same person - working on this basis, the tree seems to be building up nicely.

I agree the death of Henry in 1747 is John/Mary's child  - so far i think there are two Bent families in Whaddon - Henry/Elizabeth is one with John/Mary as the other.

I did find mention of Henry as a Carpenter and think this is the father who now seems to have been married three times. Some details on the father of Henry (1713) - the 1713 Poll Books show him from Whaddon cum Nasshe (pt Stony Stratford)  with him also referred to as Henery.

It is a challenge going back so far but am very grateful for your information.

Alan

Hi,

An update - I have written to Buckinghamshire Archives and await their response regarding the court events on 8 Nov 1752 - it appears to relate to a change of use of an acre of sweard (an old word meaning skin or rind, for grass covered ground or turf) from Henry Bent to a Robert Taylor the Younger of Whaddon. Later there is another court event on 15 April 1776 where an acre of land in Hedge Row Furlong transfers its use to Daniel Bent of Whaddon a Butcher. from Robert Taylor  - same piece of ground maybe?

I also found a reference to a pedigree of the Bent family over 5 generations in early 19th century and have asked for more information. Maybe this might help to connect the dots (or confuse me even more!!)

Hi,

Whilst waiting for a response from Buckingham Archives, I wondered if there were any records for 3 of the children with potential marriages as follows -

a) Elizabeth (1748) married Thomas Buckland 5 Jan 1770 - two children William Buckland (31/1//1770) and Henry Buckland (14/4/1779).
b) Henry (1750) married Susannah Ray 10 June 1776 - no known children
c) Susannah (1752) married Samuel Harris 31 August 1895 - Did she have a child Thomas born 11 June 1780 - can't immediately see mention of a father.
