Non conformists
« on: Monday 01 September 25 13:30 BST (UK) »
Hi all,
I am trying to find where the non conformist meeting house was in Royston. It says on the baptisms of several ancestors Royston meeting house.
Just wonder if anyone would know if it wasn’t in Royston then where would it have been ?

Any help would be appreciated, the family surname is wright and my great great gran was baptised in
1831.
               Many thanks
                 Sue Ault

Sorry I can’t answer your specific question, but it’s just an idea, Are you sure it’s a nonconformist church or chapel?
Meting House usually refers specifically to the Quakers..

Quakers do not baptise children, though they do keep records of births, which family lore might call "baptisms". There were Congregational (aka Independent) Churches in Royston in 1831, in John St and Kneesworth St, probably now part of Royston (Melbourn) United Reformed Church. I don't know about other denominations, e.g. Methodists.
Researching Penge, Anerley, (including the Crystal Palace) and neighbouring parts of Beckenham, currently in London (Bromley), formerly Surrey and/or Kent.

I was fortunate to visit the records centre years ago before the internet
Yep I’m that old. I can’t remember which one, but I was able to obtain lots of photo of Royston and predominantly kneesworth st. No where can I find the Royston meeting house.

I will just have to keep digging
Thanks all.

Hi,

I presume you have found this?

   https://discovery.nationalarchives.gov.uk/details/r/N13641065

It looks like the name of the meeting changed over the years?

Also there is a non conformist chapel shown on the early OS maps, though the OS usually seems to specify Quaker where relevant.

It was where a burying ground is shown across the road from the Congregational Chapel, which is shown on an early OS maps that I cannot now find, and is described as Non Conformist.
