Canadian Newspapers

Albert Edward Brierley was born in Oldham in 1901 and went to Cambridge University, in 1929 he went to Canada to be a professor at St Catherines Boarding School in Ontario. In 1933 he was living with his brother in Camberwell London and in 1939 at Paddington and was a Branch Store Manager for Marks and Spencer? I wonder if the Canadian Newspapers might give a clue to why he left Canada  He never married and when he died in 1978 his money went to founding a scholarship at Porterhouse College, known as The Brierley Award.
His brother Henry had gone to Canada in 1924 but had to return because his child was sick and died in 1925. Henry had been an objector in WW1 and was an accountant but was reduced to selling underwear on the markets in 1921.  Thank you

Hi,

There is a small mention in the Standard newspaper St.. Catharine's, Ontario 6 June, 1932.

" Mr. A.E. Brierley of Ridley College is leaving this week for holiday in England."

He appears on the incoming passenger list from Montreal arriving Liverpool 3 July 1932, age 31, school master, going to The Croft, Sheen Gate Grdns., London. He lists his future permanent residence  as "Other parts of the British Empire."

Hi,

Ridley College has digital archives with year books etc. Might be worth an enquiry to them,
email address for the archives is at the bottom of this link.

Thank you for these, sounds a bit odd, other parts of the empire? Their father died in 1926 leaving £3,800 so they could afford to please themselves.
Thank you

Hi,

Welcome.  :) I think perhaps it was his intention to return to Canada, but something happened
to change those plans during his holiday in the UK.

In case you didn't have this, here he is on the 1931 Canadian census, age 30, school master.
He is second from the bottom.

Hi,

There is another passenger list for Albert in 1931, from New York, USA arriving Southampton 28 July 1931 and again going to The Croft, Sheen Gate.

His return journey incoming from Southampton arriving New York, USA 4 Sept. 1931 in transit to Canada, age 30, professor. Name of friend/relative in UK, friend Mrs. A. Driver, The Croft, Sheen Gate.

Have you come across Mrs. A. Driver in your search.

I don't know who Mrs Driver can be, I know he left legacies to four female friends, will have to dig out the will. Far as I know his only relatives were his brother and his wife who was my grandad's cousin.
Thank you again
