3/9126 Pte William Waddington West Ridings Regiment
« on: Saturday 30 August 25 12:02 BST (UK) »
Hello
I am after some help identifying William

He was KIA 14th November 1914 with 2nd Dukes near Veldhoek Chateau

SDGW gives born Shaw and enlisted Oldham - he was a pre war reservist

I cannot find anyone on the census matching  born Nov 1888 and son born 1906

Also Fold 3 has a pension record (i don't have access) but it lists him possibly as Thomas Morris
Wife was Mary Ellen and son Thomas Waddington

Soldiers Effects state Alias Morris

If anyone can add more to this id appreciate it (I cannot read the Fold 3 Red writing) on the Effects does it say Mary E Smith as widow ?

Thanks

Ady

Yes, Mary Ellen remarried on the 17/3/1917 to Private 241670 Harold Smith of the 4th Battalion, East Lancashire Regiment.

OK, have done a bit of 'digging' .....

Mary Ellen's second husband, Harold Smith, was KIA 21/3/1918. There is a dependant's pension card for widow, Mary Ellen of 339 Ashton Road, Oldham. The card also shows a dependant child, Thomas Morris, born 27/11/1906, Thomas is described as his step child.

The 1921 Census shows a Tom Morris, born 1906, living at 430 Ashton Road, Oldham, with Mary E Wild and her husband Joseph Wild. Tom is described as being a step son.

The 1939 Register, shows Thomas Morris (Date of birth 27/11/1906) living with his wife Emmie at 12 Ramsden Street, Oldham.

A search of civil birth registrations for a Thomas Morris born November 1906 finds a registration for Quarter 4, 1906, Ashton under Lyne District ... mother's maiden name of Cheetham

A search for a Morris to a Cheetham finds a civil registration in Quarter 4, 1906, Oldham District between a Thomas Morris and a Mary Ellen Cheetham.

A search in the 1911 Census shows Mary Ellen Morris and son Thomas living with her parents (Tom and Esther Ann Cheetham) at 312 Ashton Road, Oldham.

Conclusion.... Thomas Morris appears to be his correct name with William Waddington being an alias. This would appear to agree with William Waddington enlisting into the West Riding Regiment with the number 9126 as Paul Nixon's army numbers website records that soldier 8880 enlisted on 25/1/1907 and soldier 9257 enlisted on 15/5/1908. Looks like he did a bit of a runner??
