Convent of Mercy, Wigton, Cumberland 1921 census
« on: Thursday 28 August 25 09:53 BST (UK) »
I am researching  a branch of my family called the Grahams.
They lived in an industrial suburb of Wallsend called Willington Quay.
Their names were Francis and Mary Anne. They both died in 1918 of the flu.
I believe I have found 2 of their orphan daughters in the 1921 census in the Convent of Mercy, Wigton, Cumberland. The ages match and the place of birth is correct. On the census it states both parents dead.
These 2 girls are listed on the census as Catherine (born about 1912) and Margaret (born about 1909). I have a birth certificate for Kathleen Graham born 1911. I think it's her.
I would like to try to confirm these are my family find out what happened to them. What is known about this institution and is there any way of finding out?  If you are able to do any local lookups or provide detail about the convent I would appreciate anything at all.
Thank you
ps  I do have the previous census records for this family.

Just for general interest: here is the convent on an OS map from around that period (actually pre-WWI). Everything that I have seen online indicates that the orphanage was part of the convent complex.

You haven't included any details of Mary Ann's maiden name

Margaret should be on the 1911 census if she was their daughter

Go to https://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/certificates/Login.asp  - registration is free

Search for Graham births with Mary Ann's maiden name to establish names/sex/birthyear

You can buy a digital copy of their birth certs for £3 each which will confirm parents christian names & more importantly give you their full birthdates

Use freebmd to look for possible marriages or use their full birthdates to look for possible matches on the 1939 register.  They may have married by 1939 so if you match a birthdate you then need to look for a marriage

I have a lot of information on the family including the 1911 census where thy are at 63 Bewicke Street Willington Quay. Mary Ann who died in 1918 at that address, her maiden name was Coleman.
I have completed my research on Francis and Mary Ann the parents although I'm interested in finding more about Francis's birth, according to  censuses he was born 1869 Ireland.

Her orphan daughters were Kathleen (21 6/1911), Margaret Alice (15 January, 1909)  and  Mary Ann 09.02/1902.

What I am trying to find out is whether these orphans at Wigton in 1921 who were from Willington Quay with matching ages, are my relatives and if so  happened to them afterwards. From the records which I do have the family were Roman Catholics.

I presume you do not have the marriage certificate of Francis Graham to mary Ann Coleman, naming his father and occupation.

Francis is in Wallsend in 1891 census aged 24.

Francis and Mary Ann's eldest child in 1901 is son Francis born

GRAHAM, FRANCIS       COLEMAN

If parents followed naming patterns this could be the birth of Francis snr in Tyrone in 1867.

You can find out quite a bit about the Convent of Mercy at Wigton by using Google.

The full name was The Convent of the Sisters of Mercy, part of the Union of the Sisters of Mercy.   They seem to have an archive, so it might be worth contacting them.
There is more information and an email address here https://www.sistersofmercyunion.org.uk/our-history/archive/
